About the role

Job Description

Registered  Senior Medical Scientist / Senior Biomedical Scientist role – in Microbiology will be responsible for Microbiology Laboratory operations in the absence of Chief Medical Scientist reporting directly to the Laboratory Services Director during these periods. Authorising results, ensuring result accuracy at all times. Evaluating results and communicating with your Chief Medical Scientist within the Microbiology Laboratory, Laboratory Operations Director, Consultant Microbiologist and/or requesting clinician any relevant information regarding patient safety. Assisting with the validations and verifications of new or amended methods/kits/equipment when required. Contributing to monitoring, recording and investigations for audits. Plus supervising and supporting basic grade scientists, students and auxiliary laboratory personnel.

Specific Tasks

* Perform routine microbiological testing and sample analysis, ensuring accurate and timely delivery of patient results. * Authorise, evaluate and report results, escalating clinically significant findings where appropriate. * Ensure compliance with laboratory quality systems, policies, procedures and accreditation requirements. * Utilise the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and maintain accurate laboratory documentation. * Support quality assurance activities, including EQA, audits, non-conformance investigations, incident reporting and corrective actions. * Assist with the validation and verification of new methods, equipment and processes. * Monitor laboratory equipment performance, troubleshoot issues and support preventative maintenance activities. * Manage reagent and consumable stock levels within the department. * Support the Chief Medical Scientist in the day-to-day operation and continuous improvement of the Microbiology Laboratory. * Participate in recruitment, training and departmental meetings as required. * Promote Good Laboratory Practice and maintain a safe, clean and organised working environment.

Working Hours: 35 hours per week

Qualifications

Education

* Bachelors Degree in Biomedical Science

Experience

* At least 5 years’ experience as a Basic Grade Medical Scientist/Biomedical Scientist in a medical Microbiology laboratory

or

* Master’s degree qualification- At least 2 years' experience as Senior Medical in medical Microbiology laboratory

Any required licences / certifications or membership

Medical Scientist - CORU registered

or

Biomedical Scientist - HCPC registered
