Job Description

Position Summary  The Barista is responsible for delivering an exceptional beverage experience through the preparation and service of high-quality coffee, espresso beverages, premium teas, specialty hot chocolate, non-alcoholic beverages, and morning cocktails. This position works closely with leadership and the broader service team to ensure that beverages are prepared, presented, and served consistently and efficiently in line with the service standards of our hotel property. This position requires knowledge of beverage ingredients and preparation methods and the ability to work in a high-volume hospitality environment. This position reports to the Restaurant Manager.

Essential Job Functions/Key Job Responsibilities  •    Prepare and serve coffee and espresso beverages, including espresso, Americano, cappuccino, latte, flat white, macchiato, cortado, mocha, cold brew, iced coffee, and seasonal specialty coffees, to established recipes and quality standards  •    Operate espresso machines and grinders, including grinder calibration, dosing, tamping, extraction, and milk steaming, to produce consistent espresso quality, milk texture, and temperature, including latte art and alternative milk preparations (oat, almond, soy, and other available options)  •    Prepare and serve loose-leaf and packaged teas and specialty tea beverages, including iced tea, tea lattes, matcha, and chai, using appropriate water temperatures, steeping times, and teaware  •    Prepare traditional and specialty hot chocolate and other warm beverages according to approved recipes and presentation standards  •    Prepare and serve non-alcoholic beverages, including juices, soft drinks, house-made lemonade, and seasonal refreshers, and monitor product quality, carbonation, and freshness  •    Prepare and serve approved morning cocktails, such as mimosas, Bloody Marys, screwdrivers, and bellinis, following established recipes, presentation standards, and applicable alcohol-service regulations  •    Provide beverage recommendations based on guest preferences, dietary requirements, and flavor profiles, and communicate ingredient availability, preparation times, and substitutions accurately  •    Present beverages with the correct glassware, cups, saucers, napkins, accompaniments, and garnishes  •    Address guest concerns promptly and professionally, involve a supervisor when appropriate, and protect guest privacy  •    Communicate with servers, leadership, and colleagues across Food & Beverage and other hotel departments regarding beverage orders, guest requests, and service concerns  •    Complete assigned opening, service, and closing duties according to departmental checklists, including mise en place, stocking and cleaning beverage stations, monitoring par levels, product rotation, and equipment shutdown  •    Follow food-safety, sanitation, and workplace-safety procedures, including temperature control, first-in, first-out (FIFO) rotation and labeling, allergen cross-contact prevention, cleaning and maintaining espresso machines, grinders, and other equipment, and safe handling of hot liquids, steam wands, glassware, and chemicals, and report equipment malfunctions, spills, hazards, and food-safety concerns immediately  •    Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements  •    High School Diploma or equivalent required  •    Must be over 18 years of age  •    Previous Barista experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities  •    Knowledge of espresso preparation, including extraction, grinder calibration, dosing, tamping, milk steaming, and espresso machine operation  •    Knowledge of coffee origins, roast profiles, tasting notes, processing methods, and brewing techniques  •    Knowledge of tea varieties, origins, flavor profiles, caffeine levels, water temperatures, and steeping times  •    Knowledge of beverage ingredients, flavor profiles, and preparation methods, including the spirits, sparkling wines, modifiers, and juices used in morning cocktails  •    Knowledge of food-safety, sanitation, and allergen-awareness practices and applicable alcohol-service regulations  •    Skill in preparing beverages to established recipes with consistent flavor, temperature, and presentation  •    Ability to provide attentive, personalized guest service consistent with the service standards of The Little Nell  •    Ability to maintain composure, professionalism, and attention to detail during high-volume service periods  •    Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully with guests, colleagues, and leadership  •    Ability to organize work, follow checklists, and manage mise en place and station setup  •    Ability to protect guest privacy and maintain professional conduct

Additional Information

Work Environment & Physical Demands •    Ability to reach, crouch, kneel, stand, walk or be on your feet for extended periods of time •    Regularly work in wet, hot and humid conditions for extended periods of time and may be required to walk on slippery and uneven surfaces •    Must be able to occasionally lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs. individually or with assistance (weight limits can vary according to position, but no more than 50)
