About the role

About Modo Energy

The energy transition is the biggest infrastructure buildout in human history. Modo Energy is the data platform at the centre of it.

We build the benchmarking, forecasting, and valuation tools that the world's most serious energy investors, developers, and operators depend on to make decisions. If a battery gets financed, built, or traded anywhere in the world, there's a good chance Modo Energy's data was in the room.

Founded in 2019, we're 90+ people across London, New York, Sydney, and Madrid; $30M Series B, AI-native, and moving fast.

This is a rare chance to join a category-defining company at the moment it's scaling globally.

Location: NYC - Financial District - Hybrid Target Start Date: Dec 2, 2026 Salary: $120,000–$200,000 Visa sponsorship: Available for some visa types

About the role

Most power market analysts write for an internal audience. Here, your audience is the market. Developers, traders, investors, lenders and utilities read Modo Energy’s research to understand what happened in the market and why, and it changes their decisions. The work runs from monthly benchmark articles and market explainers to the outlook pieces clients plan around. This is not just a data analysis job. The key output is a view, and the ability to articulate it.

Why this role

Your name, your platform. Your research goes out under your byline, and you present it directly to the people who build and finance US power infrastructure. You will have the platform to become a trusted authority on your markets. You decide what matters. No one hands you a topic list. You choose which questions are worth answering, how deep to go and when to publish. A good piece this week beats a perfect one next month. A view across the whole market. Clients sit on every side of the market. You hear what each of them is asking and see the data behind the answers. Few roles in the industry offer that range. Your research shapes the forecasts. Your views feed directly into the long-term forecasts clients use to value and finance projects. Room to grow. Your coverage can expand across ISOs, and analysts here have moved into different roles as their interests grew. Time for the question, not the spreadsheet. You start with clean, live market data and AI-native tools, so your time goes into analysis rather than rebuilding datasets.

What you will do

Cover your markets. Publish regular analysis of how your markets are performing: what prices did, what batteries and other assets earned, and what is being built or waiting to connect. Typical pieces are monthly revenue reviews, quarterly market outlooks and buildout updates. Battery energy storage is the core focus, but coverage extends to solar, wind, gas and load growth. Keep the forecast inputs current. A forecast is only as good as its inputs: which assets exist and are coming, how fast demand is growing, what fuel costs, and how market rules apply. Track new batteries, generators and large loads as they connect, and verify them against market data and interconnection reports. When gas prices move or a critical rule change is approved, work out what it means for those inputs. Research the big questions. Answer what clients are asking about the system operators and the markets they run. Know ISO protocols and tariffs, PUC filings and FERC orders firsthand, not just the summaries. Form a view, use it to shape forecast assumptions, and publish research that explains the view and how you reached it. Represent your markets. Clients come to the research team first, whether the question is about the market or about a Modo Energy forecast. Explain what goes into the forecasts, what comes out and why, on client calls, at workshops and at industry events.

Work with other teams:

* Modeling: they build and run the market models behind the forecasts. You research the model inputs (load growth, retirements, rule changes, tariffs) and hand them over in a form they can implement. * Advisory: share the market read behind client work, and bring back the questions clients are asking. * Revenue: join technical sales and post-sales calls where clients want the analyst, not the pitch.

What we’re looking for

Must have

* A degree in engineering, economics, math, physics, public policy or similar * 2+ years analyzing power markets, in research, consulting, trading, development, a utility, a regulator or an ISO * You know how at least one US market clears energy and ancillary services (ERCOT, CAISO or SPP preferred) and how it differs from another * You track policy and market-rule changes, and you hold evidence-backed views on them * You pull and analyze your own data in SQL and Python. You’re not a software engineer, but you reach past Excel when the question demands it * You’ve written analysis that people outside your team read, used and acted on

Nice to have

* Experience financing or developing generation, storage or large-load projects * Experience in power system or market operations: bidding resources, structuring offtake, or running generation, transmission or load * Experience in ISO stakeholder processes or regulatory proceedings * Experience presenting to clients or at industry events

Within a year, you will:

* Own a US market. Know its rules, its assets and its live debates so well that clients call you first. * Turn rule changes into calls. Read a protocol revision or rulemaking, cut to what matters, and tell clients what it means for revenues, development risk and market outcomes. * Build it end to end. Go from raw ISO data to published research using SQL, Python and AI tools. * Take it on stage. Present and defend your work, starting in client workshops and building to conference stages.

Compensation

$120,000–$200,000 base salary depends on experience. We pay at the top of your personal market, and for exceptional candidates we’ll make it work. The range is wide because the role fits several levels:

* Lower end: You meet every Must have and bring 2–4 years analyzing power markets. * Middle: You also bring some Nice to haves, and you’ve owned coverage of a market or built a body of published analysis. * Upper end: You meet every Must have and Nice to have. You could own a market from day one.

Additional benefits include:

* Equity * 25 days PTO + 10 paid holidays * 401K with matching * 100% employer paid medical, dental, and vision plan coverage * Commuter benefits

Equal Opportunity

* Modo Energy is an equal opportunity employer - employment decisions are made on the basis of qualifications, merit, and business need.
