About the role
As a Lead Artificial Intelligence Engineer for Camgian Labs, you will lead a highly technical team developing next-generation AI/ML capabilities for national security missions.
You will remain an active technical contributor while owning architecture, technical execution, and delivery across customer-funded and internal R&D efforts. You will work directly with customers, stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams to turn mission needs into practical, effective solutions from early-stage concepts through prototype delivery.
This role is ideal for an experienced engineer who wants to remain hands-on while leading engineers, shaping technical direction, and delivering complex technical work.
Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, computer engineering, statistics, applied mathematics, or a related field.
* 7+ years of professional experience in AI/ML development, validation, and deployment.
* Demonstrated proficiency in algorithm development and implementation using Python or similar programming languages.
* Strong mathematical background and knowledge of AI, ML, deep learning, and modern data science techniques.
* Experience leading technical efforts across multiple engineers or workstreams.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Experience interacting directly with customers and stakeholders.
* Experience working in Agile or iterative development environments.
* Ability to travel up to 10% within the United States.
* Eligibility to obtain or maintain a U.S. Government Security Clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
Desired Skills
* Master’s or PhD in a relevant technical field.
* Experience leading engineering teams or serving as a technical lead.
* Experience conducting design reviews, code reviews, and architecture discussions.
* Experience mentoring engineers and supporting professional development.
* Experience deploying AI models into operational or cloud environments.

Key Responsibilities
* Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of AI/ML software prototypes.
* Own technical direction and architecture for assigned efforts and ensure consistency across projects.
* Drive technical planning, estimation, and execution across customer-funded and internal R&D efforts, including defining and tracking technical milestones and deliverables.
* Conduct design and code reviews to ensure quality, scalability, and maintainability.
* Identify and manage technical risks related to data, models, system integration, and dependencies.
* Serve as the primary technical interface with customers, presenting designs, results, and tradeoffs clearly.
* Lead and mentor a team of engineers, supporting team growth, capability development, and scaling of engineering practices.
* Improve team effectiveness through structured planning, clear prioritization, and timely resolution of technical and organizational blockers.
* Ensure engineering efforts align with customer needs and company objectives.
* Lead or contribute to proposal development, including shaping technical approaches, estimates, and solution strategies.
