Site Reliability Engineer Job Description (2026): Duties, Skills and Salary
A site reliability engineer (SRE) keeps production systems available, fast and efficient by treating operations as a software problem. SREs agree service level objectives with product teams, measure them, lead incident response, and write code to remove the repetitive manual work, or toil, that would otherwise grow with every new service.
The practice started at Google and is now common wherever services are large or critical. SREs work closely with backend and platform engineers, either embedded in product teams or in a central reliability team, and use error budgets to balance the pace of new features against risk.

About the role
We're hiring a site reliability engineer to keep [product] reliable as it grows. You'll define SLOs with product teams, improve observability, lead incident response and write the automation that keeps [number] services running without heroics.
What you'll do
- Define and track SLIs and SLOs with service owners, and use error budgets to guide release decisions.
- Build observability (metrics, logs and traces) with [Prometheus, Grafana, OpenTelemetry or Datadog].
- Act as incident commander, and run blameless postmortems with owners and deadlines for every follow-up.
- Find toil and automate it away: recovery, scaling and routine operations in [Go or Python].
- Plan capacity and run load tests before launches and seasonal peaks.
- Review designs for new services with an eye on failure modes, dependencies and graceful degradation.
- Run game days that test how systems and people respond to failure.
What you'll bring
- [X]+ years in SRE, production engineering or backend roles with on-call responsibility.
- Strong coding in Go, Python or Java, beyond shell scripts.
- Deep knowledge of Linux, networking and how distributed systems fail.
- Experience running services on Kubernetes and [cloud provider] at meaningful scale.
- Incident management experience, including leading the response.
- Comfort with data: you can turn metrics into a convincing case for reliability work.
Nice to have
- Experience introducing SLOs to an organization that had none.
- Database reliability work on PostgreSQL, MySQL, Cassandra or similar.
- Contributions to observability or infrastructure open-source projects.
- Multi-region or disaster recovery design.
What we offer
- [Pay range: e.g. $X–$Y base salary, plus bonus or equity if offered]
- [On-call compensation, time off after major incidents, learning budget]
- [Health cover, retirement or pension plan, paid time off, parental leave]
- [Work authorization: whether you can sponsor a visa or hire through an employer of record]
[Our process: a recruiter call, a coding interview, a troubleshooting session on a simulated production incident, a reliability-focused system design interview, and a team call.]
[Your equal opportunity statement, and how candidates can ask for adjustments during the process]
Put the pay range in the ad. Several US states, including California, Colorado, New York and Washington, require it in job postings, and the EU Pay Transparency Directive gives applicants the right to know the starting pay or its range before the interview.

Site Reliability Engineer duties by seniority
What the job usually looks like at each level. Pitch the ad at one level and say which in the title.
Junior
- Joins on-call with a buddy and handles well-documented alerts.
- Improves dashboards, alert thresholds and runbooks for existing services.
- Automates small operational chores.
Mid-level
- Owns reliability for a set of services, including their SLOs.
- Commands incidents and drives postmortem actions to completion.
- Builds automation that removes whole categories of toil.
Senior
- Sets reliability strategy: SLO policy, incident process and on-call health.
- Designs for resilience across regions, dependencies and data stores.
- Uses reliability data to shape product roadmaps, and coaches other engineers.
Site Reliability Engineer career path
- Junior SRE
- Site Reliability Engineer
- Senior SRE
- Staff SRE or SRE Manager
SREs often come from backend development or systems administration; strong software skills plus a taste for operations is the usual mix. Senior SREs move into staff or principal roles that set reliability direction, into SRE management, or into platform engineering and infrastructure architecture.

Site Reliability Engineer job description FAQ
What does a site reliability engineer do?
Keeps production systems reliable with software engineering: setting service level objectives, building monitoring, leading incident response, planning capacity and automating operational work, so reliability doesn't depend on manual heroics.
What are SLOs, and why do SRE job ads mention them?
A service level objective is a reliability target for something users notice, such as how many requests succeed or how fast pages load over a month. Owning SLOs, and the error budgets that come with them, is the core of the SRE job.
Do SREs need to be strong programmers?
In most SRE roles, yes. The job is replacing manual operations with software, so ads usually ask for production-quality code in Go, Python or Java alongside systems and networking knowledge.
