Grant Writer Resume Example (2026)
By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page
Grant writer job ads mostly want the same proof: you can research a funder, write a persuasive case and account for the money. A resume that lists "strong writing skills" tells a hiring committee nothing they can't assume. What moves you forward is naming the funders, the amounts requested and won, and the programs that got funded because of your proposal.
The example below is a grant writer with five years split between a food bank and a youth literacy nonprofit. Each bullet names the funder type, the ask and the outcome, instead of counting proposals submitted.

How to write a grant writer resume
Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.
Header: name, target title and links
Use the title "Grant Writer" or "Development Writer" even if your title was Program Coordinator, and list the GPC credential near the top if you hold it. Hiring committees scan for the dollar figures first, so make sure your summary has at least one.
Summary: what you do and your best proof
State your funder types (foundation, corporate, federal, state), your years of experience and one portfolio figure: amount raised or awarded in a recent period. Skip phrases like "excellent writer"; every applicant claims that.
Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet
Open each bullet with the proposal or report, then the funder type, the amount and the outcome. "Wrote 20 proposals" says less than "wrote 20 proposals, winning $900K including a 3-year renewal." Include compliance and reporting bullets, not only wins.
Skills: grouped, in the ad's words
Group into writing, research, systems and program/compliance. Name specific databases and CRMs (Foundation Directory, Instrumentl, Salesforce NPSP) rather than "grant databases," and list federal compliance frameworks only if you've actually worked under them.
Education and certifications
List your degree with the year; English, communications and nonprofit management degrees are all common paths in. Add the GPC credential, with "in progress" if you're studying for it, since many postings prefer or require it.
Skills to put on a grant writer resume
Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.
Hard skills
- Proposal narrative writing
- Name the funder type and give one proposal's ask and award amount in a bullet.
- LOI drafting
- State how many LOIs you wrote and what share were invited to submit a full proposal.
- Budget narratives
- Mention a budget you tied to narrative line by line and any audit or reviewer feedback it passed.
- Logic models
- Point to a program's logic model you built or updated and the grant it supported.
- Funder research
- Say which databases you use and how many qualified prospects you added in a period.
- Federal compliance
- Name the agency or rule set (OMB Uniform Guidance, HUD) and a reporting task you handled under it.
- Grant reporting
- Give your on-time submission rate or the number of reports delivered in a year.
- Case for support
- Describe the case document you wrote or revised and where it's now used.
- Prospect research
- Name the tool (Foundation Directory, Instrumentl) and how many new funders it surfaced.
- Grant calendar management
- Give the number of open opportunities you tracked and your on-time submission rate.
- Outcome data collection
- Say which program data you pulled and how it replaced a vaguer claim in a proposal.
- CRM / grants management software
- Name the system (Salesforce NPSP, Submittable) and what you used it to track.
Soft skills
- Deadline management
- Give the number of proposals or reports you handled in a period with zero missed deadlines.
- Collaboration with program staff
- Describe an interview or data request that improved a specific proposal's content.
- Persuasive writing
- Point to one line or section a funder or reviewer specifically praised, if you have that feedback.
- Attention to detail
- Mention a budget or eligibility error you caught before submission.
- Relationship building
- Count the funders you've maintained multi-year relationships with and the renewal rate.
- Prioritization
- Give the number of open opportunities you juggle at once and how you decide what to write first.
- Editing and feedback
- Say how many drafts or writers you review and what your edits typically improve.
Grant Writer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.
Weak: Wrote grant proposals.
Strong: Wrote a $300K proposal to a regional health foundation that funded a mobile clinic now serving 1,200 patients a year.
Names the funder type, the amount and what the money built.
Weak: Researched funding opportunities.
Strong: Built a prospect list of 40 foundations aligned with the housing program, 11 of which became funders within a year.
Research shown through its conversion, not just the activity.
Weak: Responsible for grant reports.
Strong: Delivered 16 funder reports a year with zero late submissions, protecting $900K in renewable multi-year grants.
Ties reporting discipline to money at risk if it slipped.
Weak: Collaborated with program staff.
Strong: Interviewed 3 program managers each quarter to pull outcome data into proposals, replacing guesses with figures funders could verify.
Shows how collaboration produced credible content.
Weak: Managed grant calendar.
Strong: Tracked 45 open opportunities and deadlines in Instrumentl, raising the proposal submission rate from 60% to 95% of identified fits.
A calendar skill turned into a measurable improvement.
Weak: Strong writing skills.
Strong: Cut a funder's required budget narrative from 4 pages to 2 while keeping every line item traceable, per reviewer feedback that called it the clearest in the cohort.
Demonstrates the craft with evidence from the funder's side.

Common grant writer resume mistakes
Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.
No dollar amounts anywhere
Grant writing is judged on money raised. State both the amount requested and the amount awarded for at least your strongest proposals.
Counting proposals instead of wins
"Wrote 50 proposals" doesn't say how many were funded. Give your win rate or total dollars secured alongside the count.
Treating writing and reporting as separate skills
Funders renew based on reports as much as proposals. Include at least one bullet about on-time reporting or compliance.
Vague program outcomes
"Helped many families" reads as filler. Replace with a number: people served, dollars saved, or percentage change in a tracked outcome.
Omitting funder type
Foundation, corporate, federal and state grants have different rules and competitiveness. Naming the type shows which skills you actually have.
ATS tips for a grant writer resume
Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.
- State the dollar amounts requested and won; funders and hiring committees both read for this number first.
- Name funder types you've written for (foundation, corporate, federal, state) since each has different rules.
- Mention compliance and reporting, not just proposal writing; funders renew based on reports as much as asks.
- If you know a grants database or CRM (Instrumentl, Foundation Directory, Salesforce NPSP), name it directly.
- Keep outcome numbers specific to the program funded, not the whole organization's budget.

Grant Writer resume FAQ
What should a grant writer put on a resume if proposals aren't public?
You can usually share the amount requested, the amount awarded and the funder type (foundation, corporate, federal) without naming the funder if your organization asks for discretion.
How do I show grant writing experience with no nonprofit job title?
Count grant work done as a volunteer, board member or in a related role like program coordinator; list the proposals and amounts under that job's bullets.
Is a Grant Professional Certified (GPC) credential worth listing?
Yes. It signals you know funder compliance and the full grant cycle, which matters to hiring committees screening many applicants with similar writing samples.
Should I include a writing sample link on a grant writer resume?
If you have a redacted proposal excerpt or case for support you can share, a Portfolio link helps; just make sure it contains no donor or beneficiary names.
How we built this page
The FindAJobAI team wrote the three example resumes, the bullets, the skills and the advice for grant writer roles. The people, employers and numbers in the examples are invented; the structure, the tools and the way each bullet is built are the parts to copy.
Once we track enough live grant writer job ads, this page also shows the skills they ask for most, counted the same way as our in-demand skills report.
