Loan Officer Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

Loan officer postings ask for two things at once: sales ability and lending knowledge. A resume that only lists products (mortgages, HELOCs, SBA loans) without loan volume, approval rates or portfolio size leaves a hiring manager unsure whether you can actually originate and close. The strongest loan officer resumes name the loan types, the volume closed and what happened to the borrower relationship after closing.

The example below is a loan officer with five years split between a credit union and a regional bank's mortgage division. Notice how each bullet states the loan type, the dollar volume or count, and the result, whether that's an approval rate, a closing time or a referral number.

How to write a loan officer resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Use the title “Loan Officer” even if your title was Mortgage Loan Originator or Lending Specialist, and note your NMLS status; many postings screen for it before anything else on the resume.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

Lead with your loan volume in dollars, the loan types you close most, and one result such as an approval rate or referral share. Skip lines like “excellent people skills”; every loan officer resume claims that.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Open each bullet with the loan type or activity, then the volume or count, then the result: an approval rate, a closing time or a dollar figure. “Processed loan applications” says far less than the number of files and what happened to them.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Group them into loan types, underwriting basics, compliance and the systems you use (Encompass, Calyx Point). Name the specific loan programs (FHA, VA, HELOC) the ad asks for instead of a general “mortgages” line.

  5. Education and certifications

List your degree and year, and state your NMLS license and the states you're licensed in. Without full origination experience, add detail on a processing or servicing role, since it shows you understand a file end to end.

Skills to put on a loan officer resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Hard skills

Mortgage origination (conventional, FHA, VA)
Give your average monthly or annual volume in dollars and the loan types you close most often.
Consumer and auto lending
State the yearly dollar volume or loan count and the credit union or bank program it ran through.
Home equity lines (HELOC)
Mention how many existing customers you cross-sold a line to and the new balance it added.
Debt-to-income analysis
Give the number of files a month where catching a DTI issue early kept the loan on track.
Credit report review
Describe a credit issue you caught before submission and how it changed the loan structure.
Income and asset verification
Say how many files a month you verify and an error type you catch most often.
Encompass or Calyx Point
Name the loan origination system you use daily and the pipeline size you manage in it.
TRID and RESPA compliance
Mention a process you follow to keep disclosures on time, such as a closing-disclosure checklist.
Fair Lending regulations
Reference training completed or a review process you follow, without overstating legal expertise.
NMLS licensing
State that you're NMLS licensed and in which states; leave your license number off a public resume.
Referral network building
Count the realtors, builders or advisors in your network and the share of volume they bring.
Pull-through and approval rate tracking
Give your approval or pull-through rate and one habit that keeps it high, like pre-screening files.

Soft skills

Client communication
Describe how you walk a borrower through a step most officers skip explaining, like rate locks.
Patience with first-time buyers
Give the number of first-time buyers you've guided a year and one common question you always answer early.
Attention to detail
Mention a documentation error you caught that would have delayed or sunk a closing.
Sales pipeline management
State how many active files you typically manage at once and how you prioritize them.
Relationship building
Name the referral partners you built relationships with and how often you meet with them.
Working under deadline pressure
Describe a closing deadline you hit despite a late document or appraisal delay.
Coaching
Count officers or processors you trained and a metric that improved after.

Loan Officer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Originated loans for customers.

Strong: Closed an average of $1.6M a month in conventional and FHA purchase loans across 45 borrowers a year.

Gives the monthly volume and the borrower count, not just the activity.

  2. Weak: Built relationships with realtors.

Strong: Built a referral pipeline with 9 local realtors that grew from 5% to 22% of new purchase-loan applications in under two years.

Names the number of partners and the share of business they now bring.

  3. Weak: Reviewed loan applications for accuracy.

Strong: Flagged credit and documentation gaps on 10 files a month before submission, raising the team's underwriting approval rate from 85% to 92%.

Turns a review task into a measurable approval outcome.

  4. Weak: Helped customers understand the loan process.

Strong: Guided 60 first-time buyers a year through the pre-approval process, cutting the average time from application to clear-to-close from 35 days to 24.

Shows scale and a concrete timeline improvement.

  5. Weak: Cross-sold banking products.

Strong: Cross-sold home equity lines to 30 existing checking customers a year, adding $750K in new balances for the branch.

Quantifies both the customers reached and the dollar result.

  6. Weak: Met loan volume goals.

Strong: Finished the year at $18M in total loan volume, exceeding the branch's assigned goal by 20% while carrying a full underwriting caseload.

Replaces a vague goal claim with the actual number and the margin over target.

Common loan officer resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. No loan volume stated

A hiring manager's first question is usually how much you close. Give a monthly or annual dollar figure, even an average.

  2. Loan types left vague

“Residential and consumer loans” could mean anything. Name the specific programs, such as FHA, VA, HELOC or SBA, you actually originate.

  3. No mention of approval or pull-through rate

If you track one, include it. It tells a hiring manager how well you prep files, not just how many you submit.

  4. Referral sources left uncounted

“Built relationships with realtors” is common on every resume. Say how many partners and what share of your volume they bring.

  5. Omitting the NMLS license

Most lending roles require it before an interview is scheduled. State that you're licensed and where, without listing the actual license number on a public resume.

ATS tips for a loan officer resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • State your average or annual loan volume in dollars; it's the first number most lending managers look for.
  • Name the loan types you originate (conventional, FHA, VA, HELOC, SBA); lending roles are often organized by product.
  • Mention your approval or pull-through rate if you track one; it signals how well you prep files before underwriting.
  • If you built referral sources, such as realtors or builders, say how many and what share of business they bring.
  • State that you're NMLS licensed and where, but leave the license number off a public resume.

Loan Officer resume FAQ

What should a loan officer put on their resume besides sales numbers?

Loan types, approval or pull-through rate, referral sources and any compliance knowledge such as TRID or Fair Lending. Sales volume matters, but underwriting-ready files and referral pipelines show you can sustain that volume.

Do I need an NMLS license listed on my resume?

Yes, mention that you're NMLS licensed and in which states, since many postings require it before an interview. Leave the license number off a public resume and share it only when asked directly.

How do I show loan volume if I worked on a team rather than as the lead originator?

Give the team's total volume and your role in it, such as the share of files you processed or the number of closings you managed, instead of claiming the full team total as your own.

How we built this page

The FindAJobAI team wrote the three example resumes, the bullets, the skills and the advice for loan officer roles. The people, employers and numbers in the examples are invented; the structure, the tools and the way each bullet is built are the parts to copy.

Once we track enough live loan officer job ads, this page also shows the skills they ask for most, counted the same way as our in-demand skills report.
