Paralegal Resume Example (2026)
By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page
Paralegal job ads usually list the same tools: case management software, e-filing systems, and often a certificate. What separates applicants is proof they can keep a caseload moving without a partner chasing them. A paralegal resume should name the practice area and the deadlines or filings you owned.
The example below is a paralegal with five years split between a litigation boutique and a mid-size firm's corporate group. Notice how each bullet names the matter type, the task and what it protected or moved forward, instead of listing duties.

Mid-level paralegal resume example
A complete one-page example for a fictional paralegal: every bullet pairs an action with what changed because of it.

How to write a paralegal resume
Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.
Header: name, target title and links
Use the title “Paralegal” and name your practice area in the headline or summary if your firm used a different internal title, like Litigation Support Specialist. Firms search by practice area as much as by title.
Summary: what you do and your best proof
Name your practice area, your caseload size and one deadline or filing record, then a result: a document system you built or a deadline streak you maintained. Skip phrases like “detail-oriented team player”; show the detail instead.
Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet
Open each bullet with the task and case type, then the tool and the outcome: what you filed, reviewed or organized and what it protected or sped up. Listing duties like “drafted documents” says little; naming the document type and its result says a lot.
Skills: grouped, in the ad's words
Group them into litigation support, document platforms, corporate support and office tools. Name the specific systems (Relativity, CM/ECF, Clio) rather than “legal software,” since many firms search for them directly.
Education and certifications
List your degree or paralegal certificate with the year, and your certification (NALA, NFPA) if you hold one. Without paralegal experience, list an internship or legal-adjacent job with the same bullet structure: task, tool, result.
Skills to put on a paralegal resume
Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.
Hard skills
- E-filing systems
- Name the specific portal (CM/ECF, a state court system) and mention your filing record, such as zero missed deadlines.
- Discovery management
- Give the document volume or case count you handled and what tool you used to manage it.
- Relativity or similar review platforms
- Mention a specific task, like building a document index or search terms, and the time it saved.
- Deposition and trial prep
- Name a deliverable, such as an exhibit binder or witness index, and the trial or hearing it supported.
- Contract review
- State the contract volume per month and one type of issue you regularly flagged.
- Legal research
- Name the database (Westlaw, LexisNexis) and the kind of question you researched, like a jurisdiction-specific rule.
- Drafting pleadings and correspondence
- Name the document type and whether it went out for attorney review or was filed as drafted.
- Calendaring and deadline tracking
- Give your missed-deadline record and the number of attorneys or matters you tracked for.
- Billing and timekeeping software
- Name the system (e.g., a time-entry tool) and mention accuracy or turnaround if relevant.
- Corporate entity maintenance
- Count the entities or cap tables you maintained and how quickly you updated records after a transaction.
- Bates numbering and document production
- Mention a production volume and the tool you used to manage it.
- Client intake
- Give the number of clients or calls handled monthly and a document or letter you drafted for intake.
Soft skills
- Attention to detail
- Describe an error or inconsistency you caught before a filing or closing, and what it would have cost.
- Discretion
- Mention the sensitivity of matters you handled, such as family law or employment disputes, without naming clients.
- Deadline management
- State your missed-deadline record across a number of years or matters.
- Communication
- Give an example of explaining a process to a client or coordinating with opposing counsel's staff.
- Organization
- Describe a filing or indexing system you built and the volume of documents it handled.
- Composure under deadline pressure
- Name a trial, closing or filing deadline you supported and how you kept it on track.
- Team coordination
- Count the attorneys or paralegals you supported or supervised at once.
Paralegal resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.
Weak: Managed discovery.
Strong: Managed discovery on a 12-defendant product liability case, coordinating production of 22,000 documents with opposing counsel without a single missed deadline.
Names the case scale and the deadline record.
Weak: Drafted legal documents.
Strong: Drafted first versions of 8 motions in limine for attorney review, 2 of which were granted without edits.
Shows drafting skill through a concrete, checkable outcome.
Weak: Organized case files.
Strong: Rebuilt the case file structure in iManage for a 6-attorney litigation team, cutting document retrieval time from minutes to seconds during a 3-week trial.
Ties organization to a real deadline pressure test.
Weak: Assisted with trial preparation.
Strong: Built 14 trial exhibit binders and a digital exhibit index used by lead counsel during a 5-day jury trial, with zero exhibit mix-ups.
Specific deliverable and the result it enabled.
Weak: Reviewed contracts.
Strong: Reviewed 120 vendor contracts over a year, flagging 30 with non-standard liability caps that the attorney renegotiated before signing.
Quantifies volume and the risk the review caught.
Weak: Communicated with clients.
Strong: Fielded intake calls from 15 new clients a month, drafting engagement letters that cut attorney intake time by about 30 minutes per client.
Converts a vague duty into measurable time saved.

Common paralegal resume mistakes
Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.
Listing duties with no case context
“Managed discovery” could mean 5 documents or 50,000. Give the document volume or case type so the scope is clear.
Omitting the practice area
Litigation, family law and corporate paralegal work barely overlap. Name the practice area in the summary so your resume matches the right ad.
No deadline or accuracy record
Courts and clients care about missed filings. If you have a clean record, a streak like “zero missed filings over 2 years” is worth stating plainly.
Generic software list
“Proficient in legal software” tells a firm nothing. Name the actual platforms (Relativity, iManage, specific e-filing portals) you've used.
Hiding the certification
A NALA or NFPA certification often clears an ATS filter. Put it near the top, in the summary or right under contact info, not only at the bottom.
ATS tips for a paralegal resume
Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.
- Name the practice area (litigation, corporate, family, real estate); paralegal duties differ sharply by area and ATS systems often filter on it.
- List the case management and e-filing systems you've used by name (Relativity, iManage, CM/ECF, Clio) rather than just "legal software".
- Show deadline and caseload numbers; courts and clients care about missed filings, and so do hiring attorneys.
- Mention your certification (NALA, NFPA, or a paralegal certificate program) near the top if you have one; many firms screen for it.
- Describe drafting work by document type and outcome, not just "drafted legal documents".
For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

Paralegal resume FAQ
Do I need a certification to get a paralegal job?
Not always, but a certificate from NALA, NFPA or an ABA-approved program helps your resume pass initial screening, especially without direct experience, and some states require it for the title.
What's the difference between a legal assistant and a paralegal resume?
Paralegal resumes should emphasize substantive legal work like discovery, drafting and research; legal assistant resumes lean more toward scheduling, filing and correspondence. Use the title and bullets that match the work you actually did.
Should I list specific case types on a paralegal resume?
Yes. Naming practice areas like litigation, family law or real estate closings tells a hiring attorney immediately whether your background fits their caseload.
How we built this page
The FindAJobAI team wrote the three example resumes, the bullets, the skills and the advice for paralegal roles. The people, employers and numbers in the examples are invented; the structure, the tools and the way each bullet is built are the parts to copy.
Once we track enough live paralegal job ads, this page also shows the skills they ask for most, counted the same way as our in-demand skills report.
