Software Engineer Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

A software engineer resume has one job: show a hiring manager what you built, how big it was, and what changed because of it, in the stack their ad names. Duties like "developed features" and "fixed bugs" read the same on every resume and tell the reader nothing.

The example below is a mid-level engineer with five years on backend payment systems, applying to product companies.

How to write a software engineer resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Use Software Engineer, adding a level only when it matches the ad, and put GitHub and LinkedIn as plain links. If your title was Developer, Programmer or Member of Technical Staff, keep it on the job and use the common title at the top.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

One line on your languages and the kind of systems you build, one on the result you're proudest of, with a number. New graduates can lead with the internship or project closest to the job.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Each bullet: what you built or changed, in which stack, at what scale, and what improved (latency, reliability, revenue or time saved). Keep three to five bullets for recent roles and fewer for older ones.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Group languages, frameworks, data stores, cloud and tools, and mirror the ad's spelling. Drop anything you couldn't discuss for ten minutes in an interview.

  5. Education and certifications

List the degree with its year; bootcamps and certificates fit here too. Add coursework only while you're a new graduate, and drop the GPA after your first job unless an employer asks for it.

Skills to put on a software engineer resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Hard skills

One or two core languages
Lead with the languages you use daily and show each one in a shipped feature.
Data structures and algorithms
Show them through work, such as a cache, queue or index you designed, rather than as a list item.
System design
Describe a service you designed, its traffic, and the trade-off you chose.
APIs (REST, gRPC)
Name APIs you built, who calls them and their request volume.
SQL databases
Mention a schema or query change with its effect on latency or load.
Automated testing
Give coverage or defect numbers from tests you added, with the frameworks.
Git and code review
Mention your review volume or a review practice you introduced.
Cloud platforms
Name the services you deployed to (Lambda, ECS, Cloud Run), not just the provider.
Docker and Kubernetes
Say what you containerized or ran on a cluster, and at what scale.
CI/CD
Show a deploy frequency or pipeline time you improved.
Observability
Mention dashboards, alerts or tracing you added and an incident they shortened.
Performance tuning
Quote a before-and-after latency, memory or cost figure.

Soft skills

Ownership
Show a service you own from design doc to on-call.
Written communication
Mention design docs you wrote and the decision each one settled.
Collaboration
Name the product, design or data partners on a feature and what you shipped together.
Mentoring
Count the engineers you mentored and what they now own.
Problem-solving
Tell one hard bug in a bullet: symptom, cause, fix.
Adaptability
Mention a new language or codebase you picked up and how soon you shipped in it.
Judgment
Show a trade-off between speed and quality you made, and how it turned out.

Software Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Responsible for backend development.

Strong: Built the order-history API in Kotlin and PostgreSQL that replaced 3 legacy endpoints and serves 2 million requests a day.

Replaces a job duty with a thing you built, its stack and its scale.

  2. Weak: Fixed many bugs in production.

Strong: Traced a memory leak in the image service to an unbounded cache, ending the crashes that had paged on-call twice a week.

One specific bug with its cause and effect beats a vague volume claim.

  3. Weak: Improved application performance.

Strong: Rewrote the search indexer as a batch job with bulk writes, cutting the nightly reindex from 4 hours to 35 minutes.

Says what you changed and gives a before-and-after a reader can picture.

  4. Weak: Helped with the cloud migration.

Strong: Migrated 9 services from on-premises VMs to AWS ECS with Terraform, with no customer-facing downtime.

Scope, tools and the outcome that mattered most to the business.

  5. Weak: Participated in code reviews.

Strong: Reviewed about 15 pull requests a week and wrote the team's review checklist, which halved the back-and-forth on new hires' first changes.

Turns a routine task into a contribution with a visible result.

Building features and services

  • Built a notification preferences service in Kotlin that lets 3 million users choose their channels, cutting unsubscribe complaints by a third.
  • Shipped bulk export for enterprise accounts (API, background job queue and progress UI), which unblocked 2 stalled deals.
  • Designed the public webhooks system with signed payloads and retries, now used by 900 customer integrations.
  • Replaced a homegrown auth module with OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect, deleting 4,000 lines of code and a recurring security finding.

Performance and scale

  • Moved image processing to a queue-based worker pool, cutting upload response time from 4 seconds to 300 ms.
  • Profiled the autocomplete service and replaced a linear scan with a prefix tree, cutting peak CPU use by 45%.
  • Sharded the sessions table across 4 database nodes, keeping p99 reads under 20 ms while traffic tripled.

Quality and reliability

  • Added property-based tests to the pricing engine that found 3 rounding bugs the example-based tests had missed.
  • Set up distributed tracing with OpenTelemetry across 12 services, so finding a slow call takes minutes instead of hours.
  • Wrote a load-testing harness that exposed a connection-pool limit 2 weeks before a marketing launch.
  • Fixed a race condition in the order workflow that had caused about 40 duplicate shipments a month.

Team and process

  • Cut code review turnaround from 2 days to 6 hours by moving the team to smaller pull requests and a rotating reviewer.
  • Onboarded 5 new engineers with a starter-task list and pairing; each shipped to production in their first week.
  • Wrote 8 design docs for cross-team changes, each approved before the build started, with no rework after launch.
  • Ran the team's on-call rotation and blameless reviews, cutting repeat incidents from 7 to 1 in a year.

Common software engineer resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. Responsibilities instead of results

“Developed features and fixed bugs” describes every engineer. Replace each duty with a change you made and what it improved.

  2. A Skills list the bullets never back up

If Kubernetes appears only in Skills, interviewers assume you've read about it. Show each key skill in at least one bullet.

  3. Leaving out scale

Requests per second, users, data size and team size tell a hiring manager which problems you've faced. Add one to each bullet where you can.

  4. Two pages of old jobs

Roles from ten years ago rarely need more than a line. Spend the space on the last four or five years.

  5. Formatting that fights the parser

Two columns, icons and skill bars confuse parsers and skimmers alike. One column with standard headings reads cleanly in common applicant tracking systems.

ATS tips for a software engineer resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • Name languages and frameworks exactly as the ad does ("Spring Boot", not "Spring stuff"), and use each one in a bullet as well as in the Skills section.
  • Use a standard title, adding the common one to an unusual title: "Member of Technical Staff (Software Engineer)".
  • Skip skill bars and star ratings. Parsers read text, and "Python ●●●●○" gives a recruiter nothing to search for.
  • Write your GitHub and portfolio links as plain URLs in the header, not only behind icons, so they survive parsing.
  • Keep one date format on every role ("Apr 2023 – Present") so the system can work out your years of experience.

For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

Software Engineer resume FAQ

How long should a software engineer resume be?

One page for up to about 7–10 years of experience, two for senior engineers with more relevant work. Shorten older roles to a line or two and drop coursework once you have professional experience.

Should I include side projects on a software engineer resume?

Yes, if they show skills the job needs and you can discuss them in depth. A Projects section with what you built, the stack and a link works well for juniors and career changers; experienced engineers usually need it only for open-source work.

Which skills should a software engineer list?

The languages, frameworks and tools from the ad that you've really used, grouped into a short Skills section (Languages, Frameworks, Cloud, Tools). Every important one should also appear in a bullet that shows where you used it.

How we built this page

The FindAJobAI team wrote the three example resumes, the bullets, the skills and the advice for software engineer roles. The people, employers and numbers in the examples are invented; the structure, the tools and the way each bullet is built are the parts to copy.

The live skills section is based on 453 software engineer job ads analysed, the newest we track, with the same deterministic skill matcher as our in-demand skills report: no AI model reads the postings. It was last computed on November 2, 2026 and refreshes daily.
