Data Analyst Resume Example (2026)
By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page
Data analyst job ads tend to ask for the same core: SQL, one BI tool, Excel, and the ability to explain what the numbers mean. What separates candidates is evidence that their analysis changed something. A data analyst resume should say who used your dashboards and what they decided.
The example below is a data analyst with four years at a regional bank and an online home goods retailer. Notice how each bullet names the tool, the question and the business result, instead of counting reports built.

How to write a data analyst resume
Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.
Header: name, target title and links
Use the title “Data Analyst” even if yours was Reporting Specialist or Insights Associate, and add a portfolio or GitHub link as a plain URL. Recruiters search the standard title, and a hiring manager will open one good project.
Summary: what you do and your best proof
Name your SQL level, your BI tool and the kind of business you analyze, then one result: a decision your analysis changed. Skip lines like “passionate about data”; they fit every applicant.
Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet
Open each bullet with the question or the audience, then the tool and the result: who used the dashboard, what the analysis found and what changed. Counting reports built says little; one finding that moved revenue says a lot.
Skills: grouped, in the ad's words
Group them into query languages, BI tools, spreadsheets and statistics. Put the warehouse you queried next to SQL, and leave out tools you only touched in a course unless the ad asks for them.
Education and certifications
List your degree with the year, plus a certificate such as Google Data Analytics or Microsoft PL-300 if you hold one. Without analyst experience, add a Projects section with two analyses on public data, each stating its question and its answer.
Skills to put on a data analyst resume
Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.
Hard skills
- SQL
- Name the database or warehouse you queried and show a join, window function or cohort query in a bullet.
- Excel
- Write the features you rely on (pivot tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP) next to a report they sped up.
- Tableau
- Say who opens your dashboard, how often, and one decision it changed.
- Power BI
- Mention DAX measures or Power Query steps you wrote and the manual report they replaced.
- Python (pandas)
- Point to cleaning or automation you did with it, with the row count or the hours saved.
- Statistics
- Name the test or model you ran, such as a t-test or regression, and the question it settled.
- A/B test analysis
- Give the change tested, the metric you read and whether the winner shipped.
- Data cleaning
- Count the records you fixed or deduplicated and say what the clean data made possible.
- Dashboard design
- Describe a dashboard you simplified, with its audience and its load time or usage before and after.
- KPI definition
- Show a metric you defined with other teams and how many reports now use that definition.
- Google Analytics 4
- Tie it to a funnel or campaign question you answered from web data.
- dbt
- If the ad lists it, mention the models or tests you wrote, even a handful, and what they fed.
Soft skills
- Data storytelling
- Write one bullet where a finding led to a decision, naming who made the decision.
- Stakeholder management
- Show a metric or priority you agreed across teams, with the number of teams involved.
- Curiosity
- Describe a question nobody asked you to answer and what the answer turned up.
- Attention to detail
- Mention an error you caught before it reached a report, with its size.
- Business sense
- Translate a result into revenue, cost or customers instead of stopping at the chart.
- Prioritization
- Give your monthly request volume and how you decided what came first.
- Teaching
- Count the colleagues you trained to answer their own questions in a self-serve tool.

Who uses it, how often, and what it surfaced.

SQL skill shown through an analysis and its finding.
Weak: Analyzed data to find trends.

Data Analyst resume summary examples
Two or three lines on what you do and your strongest proof. Start from the one closest to your level and use your own facts.

Common data analyst resume mistakes
Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.
Tools with no analysis attached
SQL, Tableau and Python in Skills say what you can use; the bullets must say what you found with them. Pair each tool with a question it answered.
Counting dashboards instead of decisions
“Built 40 dashboards” invites the question of who used them. Name the audience and one decision a dashboard changed.
No business context
Say what the company sells and which team you supported. Retail, banking and SaaS analysts track different metrics, and hiring managers look for theirs.
Hiding how deep your SQL goes
“SQL” on its own hides whether you can join ten tables or tune a slow query. Mention window functions, CTEs or query tuning in a bullet when you have used them.
A portfolio of course exercises
Tutorial datasets show you finished a course. One original analysis with a clear question and a stated answer shows how you think.
ATS tips for a data analyst resume
Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.
- Name the BI tool you used (Tableau, Power BI, Looker); analyst ads usually ask for one by name.
- Show SQL in bullets with what you analyzed, not only in the Skills section.
- Describe dashboards by who used them, how often and what they changed, not by how many you built.
- Mention Excel features that show depth (pivot tables, Power Query, XLOOKUP) rather than just "Excel".
- If you link a portfolio, lead with one project that states the question, the data, the method and the answer.
For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

Data Analyst resume FAQ
What skills should a data analyst put on a resume?
SQL, a BI tool, Excel and, increasingly, Python or R, plus the business side: defining metrics, analyzing tests and presenting results. Show each one in a bullet tied to a decision.
How do I get a data analyst job with no experience?
Build one or two portfolio projects on public data that answer a real question, and count analytical work from other jobs, such as reporting, budgets and tracking, as experience.
Should I include a projects section on a data analyst resume?
Yes, if you have little analyst experience: one or two projects with the question, tools and finding work well. After a couple of years in the role, work bullets usually replace them.
How we built this page
The FindAJobAI team wrote the three example resumes, the bullets, the skills and the advice for data analyst roles. The people, employers and numbers in the examples are invented; the structure, the tools and the way each bullet is built are the parts to copy.
The live skills section is based on 496 data analyst job ads analysed, the newest we track, with the same deterministic skill matcher as our in-demand skills report: no AI model reads the postings. It was last computed on November 2, 2026 and refreshes daily.
