Financial Analyst Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

Financial analyst and FP&A ads are consistent: Excel, forecasting, budgeting, variance analysis and modeling, usually with a named ERP or planning tool. What makes a financial analyst resume stand out is saying what each model decided, and how big the business behind it was.

The example below is a senior FP&A analyst with five years at a logistics company and a medical device maker. The bullets give the size of the business supported, the accuracy of forecasts and the money involved in each decision.

How to write a financial analyst resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Use the ad's title (Financial Analyst, FP&A Analyst, Senior Financial Analyst) plus LinkedIn. Add CFA after your name only once you hold the charter; until then it belongs in its own section.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

Name your area (FP&A, corporate finance, investment analysis), the size of the business you support and one decision your work shaped, with its value.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Give every model and report a size and a use: the budget, the price or the investment it decided. Mention the systems you worked in, since finance ads name them.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Group finance skills, systems and tools. Write Excel with the features you use, and name your ERP and planning tools exactly.

  5. Education and certifications

List your degree with the year, since finance hiring often checks for finance, accounting or economics. CFA levels, a CPA or the FMVA go in their own section with dates.

Skills to put on a financial analyst resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Budgeting
Give the budget size and the departments or units it covered.
Forecasting
Quote forecast accuracy before and after your changes.
Variance analysis

SQL
Show a question you answered by querying financial data yourself.
BI dashboards
Mention Power BI or Tableau dashboards and the hours they saved.
Business partnering
Show a budget owner's decision you shaped with analysis.

Soft skills

Presenting numbers
Mention presenting to executives and the decision that followed.
Attention to detail
Mention an error you caught before it reached a report.
Business judgment
Describe a recommendation that went beyond the numbers you were asked for.
Deadline management
Show close or reporting deadlines you met month after month.
Influence
Mention persuading a leader to change a plan with your analysis.
Curiosity

Financial Analyst resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Prepared budgets and forecasts.

Strong: Rebuilt the rolling 12-month forecast with driver-based inputs, cutting forecast error from 8% to 3% and the update cycle from 5 days to 2.

Shows the method and two results finance leaders care about.

  2. Weak: Performed financial analysis.

Strong: Analyzed profitability for 2,400 customer accounts, found 140 that lost money, and supported a pricing change worth $1.8M a year.

Analysis with a decision and its value.

  3. Weak: Created financial models.

Strong: Built a DCF and scenario model for a $40M acquisition, used by the deal team in final price negotiations.

A model framed by the decision it informed.

  4. Weak: Advanced Excel skills.

Strong: Replaced 15 linked spreadsheets with one Power Query model, removing copy-paste errors from the monthly close pack.

Turns a skills claim into a fix.

  5. Weak: Partnered with business leaders.

Strong: Partnered with the VP of Operations on a cost program, tracking $5M in savings against plan in a monthly dashboard.

Business partnering with a scope and a deliverable.

  6. Weak: Prepared reports for management.

Strong: Prepared the board's quarterly financial pack, with a one-page commentary on revenue, margin and cash drivers.

Shows the audience and the judgment in the commentary.

Financial Analyst resume summary examples

Two or three lines on what you do and your strongest proof. Start from the one closest to your level and use your own facts.

Common financial analyst resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. Reports with no decision

“Prepared monthly reports” leaves out why anyone read them. Say what the report changed or who acted on it.

  2. No size for the business you support

A $5M department and a $500M division are different jobs. Give the size of the business you supported.

  3. Generic Excel

Everyone writes Excel. Name the features and the speed or accuracy they bought.

  4. Vague CFA progress

Write the exact level passed and the year; anything vaguer reads as evasive.

  5. Forgetting accuracy

Forecast error is the clearest proof of quality in FP&A. Add it wherever you can.

ATS tips for a financial analyst resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • Name the planning and ERP tools you've used (Adaptive Planning, Anaplan, Hyperion, NetSuite, SAP); FP&A ads often list them.
  • Say what your models decided, such as a budget, a price, a hiring plan or an investment, and how big it was.
  • Write Excel plus the features you use (Power Query, pivot tables, INDEX/MATCH, macros) so the depth is visible.
  • Use FP&A, budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis where they're true; these are the core search terms.
  • Put CFA progress or a CPA on its own line with the level and year.

Financial Analyst resume FAQ

What skills should a financial analyst put on a resume?

Financial modeling, budgeting, forecasting and variance analysis, advanced Excel, your planning and ERP systems, and increasingly SQL or a BI tool. Show each in a bullet with the business size and the decision.

Is the CFA worth listing if I haven't finished it?

Yes. List the levels you've passed with the year, such as "Passed CFA Level I, 2023". It signals commitment, as long as nothing implies you hold the charter.

How do I quantify financial analysis work?

Use the size of the business you supported, forecast accuracy, time saved on reporting, and the money behind decisions your analysis informed: savings, margin or investment approved.
