DevOps Engineer Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

DevOps ads name exact tools, and DevOps interviews probe scale: how many services, clusters, deploys and engineers your work supported. A DevOps engineer resume needs both, the tool names as the ad spells them and a size and outcome for every system you ran.

The example below is a senior DevOps engineer with seven years, from patching servers with Ansible to running Kubernetes on AWS for 60 developers. Notice how each bullet ends in time, money or incidents saved.

How to write a DevOps engineer resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Use DevOps Engineer, or Platform Engineer if the ad says so, and link GitHub if it holds Terraform or pipeline code. Certifications belong in their own section, not on the title line.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

Name the cloud, the IaC tool and the CI/CD system you run, then the scale (services, clusters, engineers supported) and one result in time, money or incidents.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Write each bullet as a before and after: deploy time, environment setup time, pages per week, monthly cost. Say who benefited, usually the developers you support.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Group cloud, IaC, CI/CD, containers, observability and scripting. Ads list exact tools, so match their names (GitHub Actions, not GH workflows).

  5. Education and certifications

A computing or IT degree goes last; many DevOps engineers come from operations or support, and that path is fine. Certifications with the year often weigh as much as the degree.

Skills to put on a DevOps engineer resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Hard skills

Terraform
Say how many modules, accounts or environments you manage with it.
CI/CD pipelines
Give the deploy time or frequency before and after your changes.
Docker
Mention images you built, size cuts or base-image standards you set.
Kubernetes
Give the number of clusters and nodes and what ran on them.
A major cloud
Name the AWS, Azure or GCP services you operated, with their scale.
GitOps
Show how many services deploy through Argo CD or Flux and what it replaced.
Configuration management
Mention Ansible, Chef or Puppet with the number of servers managed.
Scripting
Name Bash, Python or Go tools you wrote and the toil they removed.
Monitoring and alerting
Give pages per week or detection time before and after your changes.
Linux administration
Mention patching, hardening or troubleshooting at a stated fleet size.
Pipeline security
Name the scanners or policies you added (Trivy, Snyk, OPA) and what they blocked.
Cloud cost optimization
Put a monthly or yearly figure on the savings.

Soft skills

Enabling developers
Show a tool or template that made other engineers faster, with adoption numbers.
Incident response
Mention incidents you handled and how long recovery took.
Communication
Mention migration guides or demos that got teams to adopt a change.
Automation mindset
Describe a manual task you eliminated and the hours it freed.
Juggling interrupts
Show how you balanced project work against on-call and requests.
Teaching
Count the engineers you trained on Kubernetes, Terraform or the pipeline.

DevOps Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Managed CI/CD pipelines.

Strong: Rebuilt 30 Jenkins jobs as GitLab CI pipelines with shared templates, so every service gets tests, security scans and deploys the same way.

Says what changed and why consistency matters to a platform team.

  2. Weak: Worked with Kubernetes.

Strong: Ran 3 production Kubernetes clusters with 220 nodes and handled 4 minor-version upgrades with zero downtime using surge node pools.

Cluster size and upgrades are what DevOps interviewers ask about.

  3. Weak: Used Terraform for infrastructure.

Strong: Wrote Terraform modules for VPCs, databases and IAM that 8 teams now use, ending hand-made console changes in production.

Shows reuse across teams and the risk removed.

  4. Weak: Monitored systems.

Strong: Moved alerts from CPU thresholds to symptoms (error rate and latency), cutting false pages by 70% in a quarter.

Shows monitoring judgment, not just tool names.

  5. Weak: Reduced cloud costs.

Strong: Found $14,000 a month in idle load balancers, unattached volumes and oversized RDS instances, and added a weekly cost report per team.

Specific savings plus a process that keeps them.

  6. Weak: Responsible for security.

Strong: Moved secrets from environment files to AWS Secrets Manager with rotation and added image scanning to CI, closing 2 audit findings.

Security work tied to concrete changes and an audit result.

Common DevOps engineer resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. A tool list with no outcomes

Fifty tools in Skills and no numbers in the bullets reads like a list of tutorials. Tie each main tool to a result.

  2. No sense of scale

Managing two servers and two hundred are different jobs. Give services, clusters, accounts and engineers supported.

  3. Forgetting the developers you serve

DevOps exists to make delivery faster and safer. Show the effect on the teams who used your work.

  4. Burying certifications

Recruiters filter on AWS, Azure and Kubernetes certifications. Give them their own section with the year.

  5. Leaving out incidents and on-call

Running production is part of the role. Include incidents you handled and alerts you improved.

ATS tips for a DevOps engineer resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • Write the exact tools the ad uses: Terraform rather than only "infrastructure as code", GitHub Actions or GitLab CI rather than only "pipelines".
  • Put certifications (AWS, Azure, CKA) in their own section with the year; DevOps recruiters often filter on them.
  • Give each system a size: services, clusters, nodes, deploys per day, engineers supported.
  • Use the cloud's own service names (EKS, RDS, IAM) at least once; they're common search terms.
  • Group skills by area (Cloud, IaC, CI/CD, Observability) instead of one long list of 40 tools.

For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

DevOps Engineer resume FAQ

What should a DevOps engineer resume include?

Your cloud, your infrastructure-as-code tool, your CI/CD system, containers and observability, each shown in a bullet with its scale and an outcome: faster deploys, fewer incidents or lower cost.

Are certifications important for DevOps roles?

They help, especially AWS, Azure and the Kubernetes certifications, and some employers ask for them. Hands-on bullets matter more, so give certifications their own section rather than leading with them.

How do I show DevOps impact in numbers?

Use deploy frequency, lead time, build duration, pages per week, recovery time and monthly cloud spend, each with a before-and-after you can explain in an interview.
