Accountant Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

Accounting ads name three things up front: the standard (US GAAP or IFRS), the ERP, and the close. An accountant resume should answer each, how many entities and accounts you closed and in how many days, which systems you used, and how the last audit went.

The example below is a senior accountant and CPA with six years in property management and manufacturing. Its bullets measure accuracy and speed, the two things a controller checks first, and show standards work such as lease accounting.

How to write an accountant resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Write CPA after your name only if you are licensed; candidates list exam progress under certifications. Use the standard title for your level: Staff Accountant, Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

Name the standard (US GAAP or IFRS), your industry, the close you own (entities and days) and your ERP, then one result such as a faster close or a clean audit.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Count what you handle (entities, accounts, entries, invoices) and how fast and accurately you handle it. Name standards and systems inside bullets, not only under Skills.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Group accounting topics, systems and tools. Accounting ads often filter on one ERP, so name yours exactly.

  5. Education and certifications

List the accounting degree with its year, then the CPA with its state and year, or the sections passed. Many states require extra credit hours for the CPA, so list a master's degree if you have one.

Skills to put on an accountant resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Hard skills

US GAAP or IFRS
Name the standard and the topics you've applied, such as ASC 606 or ASC 842.
Month-end close
Give the entities you close and how many days it takes.
Account reconciliations
Give the accounts you reconcile monthly and the old items you cleared.
Journal entries
Mention the monthly volume and the accuracy, such as audit adjustments avoided.
Accruals and prepaids
Mention schedules you built or automated.
ERP systems
Name NetSuite, SAP, Oracle or QuickBooks and what you did in it.
Excel
Name the functions behind a template or schedule that saved time.
Audit support
Give the schedules you prepared and how the audit went.
Fixed assets
Mention roll-forwards or asset registers you kept accurate.
Intercompany and consolidation
Give the entities and currencies you consolidated.
Internal controls
Mention controls you designed or tested, for example for SOX.
Payables and receivables
Give invoice volume and an error or collection figure.

Soft skills

Accuracy
Show a clean audit or an error rate over a long stretch.
Deadline discipline
Mention closes or filings delivered on time month after month.
Integrity
Mention a control gap you raised and how it was resolved.
Plain explanations
Mention explaining results to managers who aren't accountants.
Process improvement
Show a manual step you removed and the hours it saved.
Teamwork
Mention covering for colleagues during a close or an audit.

Accountant resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Performed month-end close.

Strong: Ran the month-end close for 3 entities with a shared close calendar and checklist in BlackLine, finishing within 5 working days for 12 straight months.

    Shows ownership, tooling and consistency.

  2. Weak: Prepared journal entries.

Strong: Prepared about 150 journal entries a month, including accruals, prepaids and intercompany, with no audit adjustments in 2 years.

Volume plus accuracy, the two things a controller checks.

  3. Weak: Reconciled accounts.

Strong: Reconciled 70 balance sheet accounts monthly and cleared a 3-year backlog of $260K in unreconciled cash differences.

Gives the scale and a clean-up result.

  4. Weak: Assisted with audits.

Strong: Served as the auditors' main contact, preparing 40 schedules and answering requests within 48 hours, so fieldwork ended a week early.

Audit support with responsiveness and an outcome.

  5. Weak: Improved processes.

Strong: Moved expense reports from paper to Expensify with automatic GL coding, cutting AP processing time by 35%.

Process improvement with the tool and the time saved.

  6. Weak: Knowledge of revenue recognition.

Strong: Applied ASC 606 to 25 multi-element contracts, building the allocation schedules behind $8M in recognized revenue.

Standard, scope and output instead of a claimed skill.

Accountant resume summary examples

Two or three lines on what you do and your strongest proof. Start from the one closest to your level and use your own facts.

Common accountant resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. Implying a license you don't hold

Writing CPA without the license is a serious problem. Say “CPA candidate” and list the sections passed.

  2. Tasks without volume

“Processed invoices” could mean 10 or 10,000. Add counts, entities and close days.

  3. No standards named

Ads search for ASC 606, ASC 842, GAAP and IFRS. Name the ones you've applied.

  4. Leaving out audit results

A clean audit is the clearest proof of quality. Mention the schedules you prepared and the outcome.

  5. Hiding system migrations

ERP and process changes are valued experience. Give each one a bullet with its scope and outcome.

ATS tips for an accountant resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • Name the standard you work under (US GAAP or IFRS) and the topics you've applied, such as ASC 606 or ASC 842; ads search for them.
  • List your ERP and close tools by name (NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks, BlackLine); accounting ads usually require one.
  • Write your CPA status precisely: licensed, with the state and year, or exam sections passed. Never imply a license you don't hold.
  • Describe the close you owned: entities, accounts and days to close.
  • Use plain titles (staff accountant, senior accountant, accounting manager) even if your company used a different one.

For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

Accountant resume FAQ

Should I put CPA on my resume if I'm still taking the exam?

Yes, accurately: "CPA candidate, 2 of 4 sections passed" or "Eligible to sit for the CPA exam." Never write CPA after your name until you're licensed.

What skills should an accountant list?

Your standard (US GAAP or IFRS), close and reconciliation work, your ERP and tools, and areas such as revenue recognition, leases, payroll or tax. Excel depth matters, so name the features you use.

How do I quantify accounting work?

Use days to close, the number of entities and accounts, transaction volumes, audit results such as adjustments proposed, money recovered or cleared, and time saved by process changes.
