Data Scientist Resume Example (2026)
By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page
Data science resumes often read like a syllabus: regression, random forests, neural networks. Hiring managers want something else, a model or analysis followed by the decision it changed and the metric that moved. A data scientist resume earns interviews with that second half.
The example below is a data scientist with six years, from healthcare analytics to churn, pricing and forecasting at a subscription company. Every modeling bullet ends in money, customers or accuracy, and one shows statistical rigor changing an answer.

How to write a data scientist resume
Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.
Header: name, target title and links
Use the title that matches the ad (Data Scientist, Applied Scientist, Decision Scientist), and link GitHub or a portfolio only if it holds clean, explained work. A headline such as “Data Scientist, Experimentation and Pricing” shows your specialty at once.
Summary: what you do and your best proof
Say which problems you work on (pricing, churn, forecasting, risk), your main tools and one result in business terms. Hiring managers want to know what kind of data scientist you are, not that you know machine learning.
Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet
Write each bullet as problem, method, result: what you modeled or tested, how, and the decision or metric that moved. Keep one bullet per role on how you communicated results, because models nobody acted on rarely count.
Skills: grouped, in the ad's words
Split languages, methods and platforms into separate lines. List only methods you can defend in an interview; technical screens pick their questions from that list.
Education and certifications
Graduate degrees carry weight in data science, so list them with field and year, and add a thesis title only when it matches the job. Course certificates and competitions belong under Projects, not Education.
Skills to put on a data scientist resume
Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.
Hard skills
- Python
- Name the libraries you use (pandas, scikit-learn, statsmodels) inside a bullet about a model that shipped.
- SQL
- Show that you pull your own data: the tables, the size and a tricky join or window function.
- Statistics
- Mention the method behind a conclusion, such as a regression with controls, not only the conclusion.
- Machine learning
- Give the model type, the metric it was judged on and the decision it changed.
- Experiment design
- State the number of tests, sample sizes or power, and one result that changed a launch.
- Causal inference
- Name the method (difference-in-differences, matching, synthetic control) and the answer it corrected.
- Forecasting
- Quote the forecast error before and after (MAPE or WAPE) and what the forecast planned.
- Feature engineering
- Describe one feature that lifted a model, with the metric change.
- R
- List it when you use it for real analysis; many health, research and insurance teams still do.
- Data visualization
- Point to a chart or dashboard that made a result easy to act on.
- Model deployment
- Say how a model reached production (batch job, API, dashboard) and who maintains it.
- Cloud data platforms
- Name the warehouse or notebook platform you work in, such as Databricks, Snowflake or BigQuery.
Soft skills
- Communication
- Mention a memo or presentation that led a non-technical leader to a decision.
- Business judgment
- Show a project you stopped or reshaped because the value wasn't there.
- Healthy skepticism
- Describe a surprising number you challenged and the real answer you found.
- Working with engineers
- Name a model you shipped with an engineering team and the part you owned.
- Prioritization
- Say how you chose between requests, with the value of the ones you picked.
- Mentoring
- Count the analysts or scientists you coached and what they went on to do.
- Fairness and privacy
- Mention bias checks or privacy reviews you ran on a model before launch.

Data Scientist resume bullet examples: weak vs strong
The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.
Weak: Built machine learning models.
Strong: Built a gradient-boosted lead-scoring model that ranks sales leads by close probability, raising the team's win rate on top-tier leads by 12%.
Pairs the model with the decision it changed.
Weak: Ran A/B tests.
Strong: Designed a sequential testing framework with guardrail metrics, letting product teams stop losing tests 2 weeks earlier on average.
Shows experimentation depth and a team-wide effect.
Weak: Analyzed large datasets.
Strong: Analyzed 18 months of app events in SQL and Python and found that users who set a goal in week one retained twice as well, which reshaped onboarding.
Insight, method and what the business did with it.
Weak: Created forecasts.
Strong: Built a hierarchical sales forecast for 1,200 products that cut forecast error (MAPE) from 24% to 13%.
Names the method and an accuracy metric.
Weak: Presented findings to stakeholders.
Strong: Turned a pricing analysis into a 2-page memo the CFO used to approve a new annual plan, now 30% of revenue.
Communication proven by the decision it led to.
Weak: Used statistics.
Strong: Used difference-in-differences on a city-by-city rollout to show the loyalty program added 3% to repeat orders, where a raw comparison had suggested 11%.
Rigor that changed the answer is the strongest proof of skill.

- Presented model results to the executive team monthly with plain-language uncertainty ranges instead of single numbers.
- Built a Streamlit app that lets marketers size an audience from the propensity model without writing SQL.
Data Scientist resume summary examples
Two or three lines on what you do and your strongest proof. Start from the one closest to your level and use your own facts.

Senior data scientist with 10 years of experience leading pricing and marketing science for a marketplace. Built the experimentation platform and the attribution model behind a $20M annual budget, and manages a team of 3.
Common data scientist resume mistakes
Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.
Listing algorithms like a syllabus
Naming every model you have heard of invites questions you can't answer well. List the methods you used on real problems and show them in bullets.
Accuracy with no baseline
An AUC of 0.85 means little on its own. Compare it with what the business used before and say what the improvement was worth.
Leaving out the decision
A model that changed nothing reads as an exercise. End each bullet with the launch, budget, price or policy it shaped.
Hiding the data work
Much of the job is getting and cleaning data. One bullet on how you built a dataset shows you can work without a prepared table.
Overclaiming causality
Saying a feature caused growth on the strength of a correlation alarms any statistician reading. Say how you established the effect, or call it an association.
ATS tips for a data scientist resume
Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.
- Pair every model with its result: the decision it changed and the metric it moved. Ads ask for impact as often as for algorithms.
- Name libraries and methods separately: scikit-learn and XGBoost are tools, causal inference and forecasting are skills, and both get searched.
- Keep SQL prominent. Data science work starts with getting the data, and hiring managers check for it.
- If you've run experiments, write both "A/B testing" and "experimentation"; ads use either term.
- Link a portfolio or notebook only if it's clean and explained; one solid project beats several course exercises.
For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

Data Scientist resume FAQ
Should a data scientist resume list every algorithm?
No. List the methods you've applied to real problems and can explain in an interview, grouped into Methods, Languages and Tools. A long list without results reads like a course syllabus.
How do I show business impact as a data scientist?
Follow each model or analysis to its decision, such as a launch, a price change or a budget shift, then give the metric that moved: conversion, churn, forecast error or cost.
Do I need a PhD for data science roles?
Many industry ads ask for a bachelor's or master's in a quantitative field, or equivalent experience; a PhD is mainly expected for research-heavy roles. Let your projects and results carry the rest.
