QA Engineer Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

QA hiring managers want to know two things: what you automated, and what it changed for the team. A QA engineer resume that lists "test cases executed" without frameworks, suite size or time saved looks like manual testing, even when it isn't.

The example below is a QA automation engineer with six years in insurance and healthcare software. It names each framework, sizes every suite and ties defects caught to their business impact, the pattern to copy with your own work.

How to write a QA engineer resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Use the title from the ad (QA Engineer, Test Automation Engineer, SDET) and link GitHub if it holds a test framework you built. If your title was Quality Analyst or Tester, keep it on the job and use the searched title in the header.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

Say whether you lean manual, automated or both, name your main framework and language, and give one result such as release time saved or defects caught before production.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Size everything: tests automated, suite run time, defects found, coverage, releases supported. Then tie it to the team's result, such as faster releases or fewer escaped bugs.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Separate automation frameworks, languages, API and performance tools, CI and test management. QA ads name these individually, so write each one out.

  5. Education and certifications

List the degree with its year and put ISTQB or a similar certificate in its own section. Testers from non-technical degrees can add a short line of automation courses.

Skills to put on a QA engineer resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Hard skills

Test automation frameworks
Name Playwright, Cypress or Selenium with your suite's size and run time.
Programming for tests
Say which language your tests are written in and any framework code you built yourself.
API testing
Give the endpoints or checks covered and the defects they caught.
Test design techniques
Mention boundary values, equivalence classes or risk-based coverage and the scenarios they produced.
Exploratory testing
Describe one serious defect you found by exploring, with its impact.
Performance testing
Name k6, JMeter or Gatling, the load you simulated and the limit you found.
Tests in CI
Say where your tests run (GitHub Actions, Jenkins, GitLab CI) and how often.
Test management tools
Mention TestRail, Zephyr or Xray with the size of your test library.
Defect reporting
Give defect counts and a sign of their clarity, such as how few came back as not reproducible.
SQL for testing
Show that you verify results or build test data with queries.
Mobile testing
Name Appium, XCUITest or Espresso and the devices you covered.
Contract testing
Mention Pact or schema checks between services and the integration breaks they ended.

Soft skills

Attention to detail
Show an edge case you found that others had missed, and what it would have cost.
Clear writing
Mention bug reports or test plans that other people relied on.
Risk judgment
Describe how you chose what to test first when time ran short.
Working with developers
Show testing work you moved earlier in the sprint together with developers.
Persistence
Describe a hard-to-reproduce bug you tracked down to its cause.
User advocacy
Mention a usability or accessibility issue you pushed to get fixed.

QA Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Tested the application.

Strong: Wrote risk-based test plans for the claims module covering 140 scenarios, automating the 20 highest-risk ones first.

Shows how you decide what to test, not just that you tested.

  2. Weak: Automated test cases.

Strong: Automated 260 regression cases in Cypress and ran them in parallel in CI, cutting the release test cycle from 2 days to 3 hours.

Framework, volume and the time saved for the whole team.

  3. Weak: Found and reported bugs.

Strong: Found a rounding error in premium calculations during exploratory testing that would have overcharged 8,000 policyholders.

One serious defect with its business impact says more than a bug count.

  4. Weak: Did API testing.

Strong: Built a Postman and Newman suite of 300 API checks that runs on every deploy, catching breaking schema changes before frontend teams hit them.

Names the tools and the problem the suite prevents.

  5. Weak: Worked with developers on quality.

Strong: Paired with developers to add unit tests at the pull-request stage, cutting defects found in QA per sprint from 25 to 9.

Quality as a team outcome, with numbers.

  6. Weak: Improved the test framework.

Strong: Replaced fixed sleeps with explicit waits and test-data APIs, cutting suite runtime by 45% and flaky failures to under 2%.

Specific engineering fixes behind a faster, more trusted suite.

Common QA engineer resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. “Executed test cases” and nothing else

Running tests is the baseline. Say what you designed, what you automated and what your testing caught.

  2. No sizes for suites or results

A suite of 40 tests and one of 4,000 are different jobs. Give counts, run times and defect numbers.

  3. Hiding manual skill to look technical

Exploratory testing finds bugs automation misses. Keep one strong manual-testing bullet even on an automation resume.

  4. Tools without saying who built the framework

Selenium in Skills doesn't show whether you designed the framework or ran someone else's. Say which you did.

  5. Leaving out CI

Tests that never run in the pipeline protect little. Say where and how often your suites run.

ATS tips for a QA engineer resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • Name each framework separately (Playwright, Cypress, Selenium, Appium); "automation tools" matches no recruiter search.
  • Include the common titles that fit you: QA engineer, test automation engineer and SDET are often searched separately.
  • Give automation numbers: tests automated, suite runtime, how often it runs and how much manual testing it replaced.
  • List the test management and CI tools you used (Jira, TestRail, Jenkins, GitHub Actions); QA ads name them often.
  • Put ISTQB or similar certifications in their own section with the year, written out in full once.

QA Engineer resume FAQ

Should a QA engineer resume focus on manual or automated testing?

Lead with whichever the job asks for, but many current ads ask for automation. If your experience is mostly manual, show what you've automated, even a small suite, plus the test design skills that transfer.

Is ISTQB certification worth putting on a QA resume?

If you have it, yes: some employers, especially in Europe, list it as a requirement or a plus. It doesn't replace automation experience, so place it below your work history rather than at the top.

What's the difference between a QA engineer and an SDET resume?

An SDET resume leans harder on code: framework design, programming languages, CI integration and API or unit-level testing. A QA engineer resume can give more room to test strategy and exploratory testing.
