Network Engineer Resume Example (2026)

By FindAJobAI team Updated How we built this page

Network engineer job ads mostly ask for the same core: routing and switching, a firewall platform, and proof you can find the cause of an outage under pressure. What separates candidates is evidence of incidents resolved and networks that stayed up during change. A network engineer resume should name the gear, the scale and what happened when something broke.

The example below is a network engineer with five years across a logistics company and a regional hospital network. Notice how each bullet names the protocol or device, the scope in sites or users, and the outcome, instead of just listing certifications.

How to write a network engineer resume

Five steps, in the order a recruiter reads the page. The format around them stays plain for every job: one column, standard headings, newest role first.

  1. Header: name, target title and links

Use the title “Network Engineer” even if yours was Network Administrator or NOC Engineer, and lead with your top certification (CCNA, CCNP, Network+) since many ATS filters and recruiters search for them directly.

  2. Summary: what you do and your best proof

Name your core platforms (Cisco, Palo Alto, Fortinet, Meraki), the scale you've worked at in sites or devices, and one concrete result: a migration completed, an incident rate cut, or uptime held during a specific event. Skip lines like “strong troubleshooting skills”; every network resume claims that.

  3. Experience: newest first, a result in every bullet

Open each bullet with the scope (how many sites, devices or users), then the action and the result: what you migrated, fixed or secured, and what changed because of it. A list of protocols you touched says little; one outage root-caused and fixed says a lot.

  4. Skills: grouped, in the ad's words

Group them into routing and switching, security, WAN or cloud, and tools, and name the specific vendor platforms you've used rather than generic terms. Put certifications in their own line near the top, since they're often a hard filter.

  5. Education and certifications

List your degree or associate's program with the year, and put certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Network+, Security+, Fortinet NSE) in a dedicated certifications line. Without full-time network experience, add a Projects section with a lab network or packet analysis exercise that names a specific problem solved.

Skills to put on a network engineer resume

Hard skills are the tools and methods of the job; soft skills are how you work with people. Each comes with one way to prove it, because a skill named only in a list counts for little. Add the ones you really have.

Hard skills

Routing protocols (OSPF, BGP)
Name the protocol and a bullet where you configured, troubleshot or redesigned it, with the number of sites or routers affected.
Switching & VLANs
Describe a VLAN redesign or spanning-tree fix tied to a specific outage or performance issue it resolved.
Firewalls (Palo Alto, Fortinet, Cisco ASA)
Name the platform and show a policy audit, migration or rule cleanup with the number of rules or sites involved.
SD-WAN
Name the vendor (Meraki, Viptela, Fortinet) and describe the migration scale, downtime and cost or performance change.
VPN (IPsec, SSL)
Point to a VPN deployment or troubleshooting case, with the number of users or sites connected.
Network monitoring (SolarWinds, PRTG)
Describe an alert or dashboard you built and the time it shaved off detecting an outage.
Wireshark / packet analysis
Give a specific issue you diagnosed from a packet capture that other tools or people missed.
Network automation (Python, Netmiko, Ansible)
Name what you automated (backups, config pushes) and the device count or hours saved.
802.1X / network access control
Describe the rollout scope and the security gap it closed.
Cloud networking (AWS VPC, Azure VNet)
Show a hybrid connectivity project, like a site-to-cloud VPN or Direct Connect setup, with its purpose.
QoS and VoIP
Describe a call-quality issue you fixed and the root cause you found.
Network documentation
Mention a wiki, diagram set or IP scheme you built and the ramp-up time it cut for others.

Soft skills

Incident response under pressure
Give one outage you resolved on-call, with the time to resolution and what changed afterward.
Cross-team coordination
Name the teams or stakeholders you scheduled cutover windows with and how many sites were involved.
Documentation habits
Point to a runbook or wiki you wrote and how it reduced ramp time or repeat questions.
Vendor management
Describe a vendor evaluation or negotiation you led and its outcome, like cost or SLA terms.
Mentoring
Count the junior engineers or technicians you trained and what skill they picked up.
Risk awareness
Describe a vulnerability or misconfiguration you caught before it caused an incident.
Change management discipline
Mention a change-approval process you followed or built and the outages it prevented.

Network Engineer resume bullet examples: weak vs strong

The same work, written two ways. The strong version names the tool, the scope and a result; the numbers are examples, yours must be real.

  1. Weak: Managed company network.

Strong: Managed routing and switching for 28 warehouse sites, redesigning core VLANs to end a broadcast storm that had caused 4 outages in a year.

Names the scope and the specific problem solved.

  2. Weak: Configured firewalls.

Strong: Audited and rebuilt Palo Alto firewall policies across 15 sites, closing 22 overly broad rules flagged in a security review.

Turns a generic task into a measurable security fix.

  3. Weak: Troubleshot network issues.

Strong: Traced a recurring VoIP call-quality issue to duplex mismatches on 14 switch ports, fixing it after 3 other techs had closed the ticket unresolved.

Shows root-cause skill with a specific, hard-to-find fix.

  4. Weak: Worked on network upgrades.

Strong: Migrated 28 sites from MPLS to SD-WAN with zero unplanned downtime, cutting monthly circuit costs by $9,400.

Pairs a technical migration with cost impact and reliability.

  5. Weak: Responsible for network uptime.

Strong: Maintained 99.9% uptime on clinical VLANs during a hospital expansion, coordinating cutover windows with 3 department heads.

Gives a concrete uptime figure and stakeholder coordination.

  6. Weak: Good with Cisco equipment.

Strong: Deployed and tuned 60 Cisco access points across 3 buildings, resolving a Wi-Fi dead zone behind 30+ monthly help desk tickets.

Replaces a skill claim with scale and the problem it solved.

Common network engineer resume mistakes

Each one is easy to make and quick to fix before you apply.

  1. Listing protocols with no incident attached

OSPF, BGP and VLANs in Skills show familiarity; the bullets need to show what you did with them. Pair each with a migration, redesign or fix.

  2. No mention of scale

"Managed the network" could mean 3 sites or 300. State the number of sites, devices or users you were responsible for.

  3. Hiding on-call and incident work

Outage response is often the most convincing part of a network resume. Name one incident, its root cause and the time to resolution.

  4. Certifications buried at the bottom

CCNA, CCNP and Network+ are frequently used as resume filters. Put them in a visible certifications line, not just mentioned in passing.

  5. Generic vendor-neutral language

"Firewall administration" hides whether you know Palo Alto, Fortinet or Cisco ASA. Name the platform; most job ads ask for a specific one.

ATS tips for a network engineer resume

Applicant tracking systems turn your file into text that recruiters search, mostly for the skills and titles in the ad. They rarely reject a resume on their own; one that parses badly or misses the ad's words just doesn't come up.

  • Name the specific platforms you've run (Cisco, Palo Alto, Meraki, Fortinet); network ads usually ask for one by name.
  • Give the scale of what you managed: number of sites, devices or users, not just "the network."
  • Describe at least one outage or incident you resolved, with the root cause and the fix.
  • List certifications (CCNA, CCNP, Network+, Security+) near the top since many ATS filters search for them directly.
  • If you automated anything (config backups, monitoring alerts), say what it replaced and the time it saved.

For the format itself, run the free ATS resume checklist.

Network Engineer resume FAQ

What certifications matter most on a network engineer resume?

CCNA or CCNP for routing and switching depth, plus Network+ or Security+ early on. List the ones you hold near your name or in a dedicated line; recruiters and ATS filters often search for them directly.

How do I show network experience with no job title to match?

Count help desk or sysadmin work that involved switches, VPNs or firewalls, and be specific about what you configured or fixed. A home lab project with real topology also counts as evidence.

Should I list every protocol I've touched?

No. List the ones you can speak to in an interview, grouped by category (routing, security, WAN), and show the deeper ones (BGP, OSPF) in a bullet, not just the Skills section.

How we built this page

The FindAJobAI team wrote the three example resumes, the bullets, the skills and the advice for network engineer roles. The people, employers and numbers in the examples are invented; the structure, the tools and the way each bullet is built are the parts to copy.

Once we track enough live network engineer job ads, this page also shows the skills they ask for most, counted the same way as our in-demand skills report.
